Right, so I am still kinda new to this whole game. SO give me leniency here.
What does family mean in this game?
I was under the impression family meant that you learn to become a stronger vampire and a stronger family member to help that future members and your family out in case of battles or wars.
So why am I under the impression that so many give a crap about their family ties now days? A lot have no problems letting others take the blame for their actions, or have nothing better to do then belittle others in their family, be it a sister, grand sire or aunt.
In reality wouldn't that get weaker vampires a**es kicked?
I mean why even bothered being sired and not go ahead and be a master vampire if you could give two s**ts about any family members you take on once you are sired into the family?
Or is it just lack of researching character sheets before you join a family?

I think only two out of my many characters are family people. Staying loyal, rising to the challenge of protecting those that are in their line...it comes with the territory. You can't just skip over it otherwise, why not become a master vampire. You're basically holding up space being someone's childer who doesn't give two shits about you. Sure you got sired under them...but all you basically served to do was give them a little boost in bp. Nothing more. You're just there to make them look good. How could anyone deal with that, is a mystery in itself. But hey, some people are blind to that fact.

'family' and 'family values' will be up to interpretation to each particular individual player. Personally, I've had family, both childer and a sire for Nems. She enjoyed both greatly. If her childer got herself in trouble, she knew Nems wasnt here to bail her out, but WAS there to listen to her and console her in times of need. Nemesis guided as she could. Now AS a childer, Nemesis felt faceless to the 'favorites' in the family line, so, the easiest way to take care of that was leave.

Hmm... well to each have different meanings as with what Beth said. For example, Chiru has several childer (and yes many are alts as well) and she cares about them and she tries hard not to play favorites. (Which no matter what she does always gets the whole playing favorites bit ) She's there if they want to talk to her, she likes to know what's going on with them and she tries to work out and on any disagreements that they may have with each other and with herself. Though some do see childer as a sport to be gained, or to be used to make themselves look good it's what happens. Chiru would never let any of her childer die for her own mistakes not even to defend her. She doesn't let her husband do it either, or her sister. Half the time if she's the one who's being attacked she doesn't even bring it up with her family because she doesn't want to make them lose their blood or anything for her. Now of course that never goes over well with Chiru's family either. Yet everyone needs and wants and desires change, and as long as there someone there to fill the need of whatever one is looking for that's really all that is left.

Hmm as a sire, Angelique adores each and everyone of her childer, she would never ask them to step into battle unless they wished to. As a rule at White Wolf we don't fight unless we are truely needed or if Florain was to ask for our aid. Angelique ties to do everything she can for her childer and her family.
As a childer, I will admit Angelique although was adopted by Sinner is seen as the eldest and strongest but she also tries to act as the youngest seeking help from her older siblings whenever they are around.
Its really a mix when it comes to her. She loves her family and will do anything for them, will never ask them to step into her battles for her as she tends to get a little cocky about that.
