The rules of this forum state that signatures must be limited to a size of 600 x 300 pixels (width and height), and no more than 250KB in size.
This guide is to help clear up any misunderstanding in checking your banner size in the easiest of ways.
Whether you are using Internet Explorer, Netscape, Foxfire, or any other browser, most all will give you the information you need with a simple click.
Right click your banner, moving down to select the ‘Properties’ option at the bottom.
In the box that will pop up, you will see various info about your banner.
Protocol, Type, Address (URL), Size and Dimensions.
Look at the Size. It will be displayed in bytes.
To convert bytes to KB you can simply drop the last three digits and round up the remaining in an approximated conversion.
Take for instance my current banner:
Size: 49813 bytes
Dimensions: 600 x 200 pixels
Its current size is 49813 bytes.
In KBs, we can estimate that is 50 KBs.
It is actually just a tad smaller, but the estimation works just fine.
JPEG images/signatures will usually always stay within the limits set by the forum guidelines.
However, if you have an animated signature, which would be in GIF format, the size will certainly need to be checked. Animated banners are often very large, so please watch your animations when you create them.
Also, please keep in mind that adding text above or below, or even a smaller banner above or below, your main banner, will affect its over all size and should be taken into consideration. Each line of text is ten pixels. That is something you must use your own judgment on, or risk having your banner deleted.
I'll use my own current banner again as an example.
My actual banner is 600 x 200. I have two lines of text beneath my banner, so I will need to add 20 pixels to the height of my signature, making it 220. Still within the forum guidelines.
When you add text above or below a banner, there's a good chance that unless its just a few words, its going to come out more than one line. One my monitor, mine shows as a single line, but on a different, smaller monitor, its two lines.
Please be considerate of your fellow forum members when designing and uploading your signatures. Not everyone has large monitors or are on high speed modems. GIFs and large images take time to load for those on dial up, slowing the site considerably.
