History:
My story has a very odd beginning. It starts when I was... Well... I don't know what age... I don't know my age now... I just woke up one day in the woods alone... I didn't know who or what I was... Or who or what anything else was... I was hungry and oddly tired, though I had just woken up… As I gazed around I smelled a wild animal… I lost time after that, it was like I blacked out... When I woke up again I was covered in blood... I wandered around like that for years... Losing time every time I felt the hunger... And waking up to blood and confusion…
After months… maybe even years of this, I met The Pack. They helped control my hunger... You see, I'm more Lycan than anything else... And I am many things. Of course I didn't know that at the time... I’m still not sure of everything I am... Anyway- The Pack taught me to control the Hunger, hone my instincts, and control the Change. They became my family. We wandered anywhere the wind took us. It was fantastic.
After several years of wandering we came across a small town called Miiska… We went in to look around and meet people. We never preyed on humans. That was the first law. As the Alpha told me “How would you like it if you settled down and someone hunted you?”
Anyway- we went into town and looked around, bought some food and clothing, and looked for a tavern to squander our coin in. It had been months since we’d been to a town and we were hungry for some regular food. I never had as much as everyone else because it made me a little sick, but I drank more than everyone... and spent more coin on clothes than the rest... I loved being able to help out the villagers.
While I was wandering around town near the docks I came across a woman watching the sunset... She was a beautiful young woman with eyes like the sea she was looking out across… When I approached her she didn’t move or look at me... Only murmured “The villagers wouldn’t be so happy to trade with you if they knew you were Lycan.”
That made me stop dead in my tracks... I don’t have the tell tale signs most of my Pack did. I stared at her dumbfounded and asked “How did you know we were…??”
“Lycan?” she murmured “You don’t have the signs, but they do. They hunch over and are constantly twitching their ears and watching around them... But that’s not how I knew... I hear the wolf howling in your soul… Yours isn’t as loud, but it’s wilder… and yet... begging to be tamed...”
I stood there, not knowing what to say or do. But then she looked at me and smiled… Those blue eyes piercing me and said “Come sit with me... Tell me your name...”
So I did.
“I don’t know what my name is,” I murmured. “But the Pack calls me Dmon because I was so wild when they found me.”
We sat for hours talking, far into the night, until she became wary of the darkness surrounding us. I walked her home, making sure she was safe inside before joining the rest of the Pack at the local tavern, joining in for drink, song, and dance. We stayed there for almost a month. Every morning I got up early to help Aelyth with her chores, and every evening we would stay out at the docks until it was late into the night.
On the day the Pack was ready to leave I told them that I had found my home. A few of them were hurt, feeling as though they hadn’t done well enough, but the Alpha understood. I had told him everything about Aelyth… And that I had fallen in love with her… And so it was with his blessing that I separated myself from the Pack and built a home on the edge of the woods to be my permanent residence.
Shortly after the house was completed, Aelyth moved in. We had kept our secret from the townspeople as long as we could, but when she moved in… We knew we had to tell the town what I was…
I called a town meeting at the tavern one night, offering to pay for all the food and drink myself. That’s where we broke the news… Most of them took it well enough. A bit surprised to learn the group of us were Lycan, but not hostile. Our pack was good to them, our coin had helped them through hard times and the new faces had helped them feel somewhat in contact with the outside world in their secluded corner of earth.
There were a few who took it with aggression. Calling me an unnatural beast and a minion of hell… I’d gone by Dæmon with the town. Aelyth’s clever thinking. They didn’t think anything about how it sounded just like demon after they’d seen the spelling. The town was simple like that.
Eventually even those who had hated me came to love me. I protected the town from raiders, went hunting for food enough for all when times were hard, and was a hard worker. Carrying bales of wheat and hay back from the fields, loads of brick from the masons... I’d even become the blacksmiths apprentice, learning quickly and doing high quality work to take out to sell to other towns... This became our routine for a few years… And Aelyth was always there when I got home… Waiting for me… With our son Orem…
Until one day… I came home to a blaze… I’d smelled it from far off but had thought it was only the burning of the fields to create ash fertilizer to plant in the next year… I heard the screams next and bolted into town roaring. I pounced on the first stranger I saw, pinning him on his back. He stared up at me, and I smelled death on him… And fear. He and his group were afraid of me… That was why they were here. To kill me.
As I took a closer look, I noticed something else… Fangs. I realized the sun had set a while back and this wasn’t a group of villagers… these were vampires. Without hesitation I ripped his head from his shoulders, leaving the corpse to bleed out… Within 5 minutes I had found every one and ripped them all to shreds. Roaring as I did...
When I’d finally calmed down, I helped get the blaze under control. I asked several people if they’d seen Aelyth and Orem, but no one knew. By the time I got to my house it had burnt itself out and was smoldering ashes. I was glad I had thought to build it a little further away from the woods just in case there would be an accident… But that moment of happiness was fleeting. I sat on the ground and howled out the pain of losing my home... not yet aware of how deep the loss was…. I had figured Aelyth had taken Orem down to the docks near the water where it was safe.
But then I heard the smallest cry from beneath the smoldering heap. I immediately began digging through the hot wood and stone, not caring about the burns. That cry had been Aelyth. I knew it was… I dug through the coals until I found my Aelyth… She was curled around Orem… trying to protect him from the flames… I dug them out and cradled them both in my arms murmuring how much I loved them and how I was so sorry to bring this upon them… Aelyth looked up at me… Her eyes still as piercing as they ever were… and told me she would love me forever. My son just looked at me with all the love in the world on his young face. Knowing his daddy had saved the town and come to save him too… They died in my arms and I howled in sadness… Wishing I had gone to my family first… Wishing I could die with them… But all I could do was sit in the smoldering embers of my home… my family dead in my arms…
I don’t recall much of what happened after that… My soul was dead… I remember the funeral pyre we had for them… On a boat out at sea… I weight myself down with the anchor as the ship sank… But as I began to die, instinct took over… I broke through the chain and swam to the surface… Unaware I had done so until I was back on the beach… The villagers tending to my bruised and broken body… I had brought so much pain to them… And yet they still embraced me…
After I healed, I helped rebuild Miiska… Left them all my coin and bid them farewell… Telling them I would see to it they stayed safe. The only possession I kept was a necklace Aelyth had had as long as I’d known her… She’d given it to Orem when he was born, and he was wearing it when they died… It was a simple necklace, a silver ankh wrapped around a red sphere... But I knew in that sphere there were pieces of my family… small portions of their souls to keep with me always…
I wandered for decades… Coming into contact with my old Pack now and again. I asked them to look after Miiska for me… And they did. I hear they’re a prospering city now… One of the biggest ports in the country. I send them coin when I can… Just to let them know I never forgot them and that I ensure their safety…
After a few more years, I stumbled into Ravenblack City. How you stumble into it is beyond me, but looking back, I really did stumble in. I wandered around the city for a year or so, feasting on the humans I had so diligently left alone… And ran into more vampires than I could imagine seeing in a lifetime… I hated them all… Every single one of them was part of the reason my family was dead… But after a while I became indifferent… I found a tavern I liked and spent ample time there. Drinking and fucking whenever I chose… I tried to have real relationships… But I couldn’t… I didn’t love them, so I was unfaithful. Using both men and women for my own pleasure. My own pain.
Until Mel... She saved my life when I looked to end it. Refused to allow me to whither away. She loved me and cared for me.. And I came to love her as well. She let me in her family. We were never formally bonded.. But I was her husband.. The father of her daughter, though not biological. We were a family... Bound by love if nothing else..
But I left my family for a search of who I was.. My past. I had received a message from one of my old Pack. Someone had come to Miiska asking about someone who looked like me.. Someone who knew about my past.. And so I left without notice... And I lost my love... My wife.. My daughter... I came back to find another man had taken my place. Become a father to my daughter... And given my wife a son..
I am no longer sure what to do... caught between the present and the past... I care for two and must chose one... The family I know and love? Or the family I could have?
